Nanotechnology surveys reveal public enthusiasm for new developments

The Minister for Industry, Tourism, and Resources, Ian MacFarlane, has released the results of 2 surveys conducted on public attitudes towards nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is described as "the manipulation of matter on an ultra-small scale to develop new products, devices and processes".

In brief, the survey results indicate that:

- while a majority of the public are aware of nanotechnology, few people have a detailed understanding of what nanotechnology entails;

- the public are hopeful about the prospects of nanotechnology, particularly its role in supporting medical and environmental advancements; and

- while excited about nanotechnology, some members of the public are concerned with the potential for food adulteration, the implications for surveillance and privacy, and the potential for nanotechnology to be misused or fall into the "wrong hands".

The surveys recommend that the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources take steps to promote nanotechnology by increasing public awareness of its functions and benefits, and taking steps to allay current community concerns about nanotechnology.
