Law NEWS - ALRC Privacy Report - ACCI Media release on ALRC Discussion Paper on privacy law

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has expressed its disappointment at the Australian Law Reform Commission's (ALRC) recommendation that the small business exemption be removed from Australia's privacy laws.

The ALRC's Discussion Paper on Australian privacy law indicates that there is "no compelling reason" to maintain the exemption. However, ACCI has stated that small businesses would incur substantial costs if the exemption is removed, including approximately $3,500 per business in initial compliance costs.

In light of the above, ACCI has argued that "no compelling case for change" has been advanced, and has asked the ALRC to "carefully consider" its final recommendations.
